EMER 1007 EMT Basic 7 4 4 4 None Basic EMT is an introductory survey of emergency medical services including medical legal/ethical aspects, patient assessment, care of wounds and fractures, airway maintenance, patient transportation, medical and environmental emergency, childbirth, and extrication.
EMER 1015 EMT Intermediate 7 3 4 8 EMT -A Certification The EMT Intermediate course is designed to upgrade the basic level emergency medical technician's techniques involving intravenous infusion and therapy, advanced training in military anti-shock trousers (MAST), and more in-depth training in rapidly identifying life-threatening emergency situations.
EMER 1113 Human Systems & Assessment 3 2 2 0 EMER 1118 Paramedic I, EMER 1123 Paramedic Clinical I This course is an introductory survey of the human body systems. Included are cellular structure and function, integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. This lecture and lab course prepares the paramedic student for assessment and management of pre-hospital patients.
EMER 1118 Paramedic I 8 5 6 0 EMT-A Certification and acceptance into Paramedic Program This course provides a framework for the Emergency Medical Technician desiring certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic. The course covers the foundation of EMS Systems, including the roles, responsibilities and well being of the Paramedic, injury and illness prevention, medical and legal issues, ethical issues, pharmacology, venous access therapeutic communications, life span development, airway management and ventilation, history taking, techniques of physical exam, patient assessment, clinical decision making, communications, documentation and rescue operations.
EMER 1124 Paramedic Clinical I 4 0 0 12 Acceptance in Paramedic program, concurrent EMER 1117 Paramedic I This course includes supervised rotations through selected clinical areas. Emphasis on developing and improving skills, which reinforce classroom instruction. Specific skill to be practiced during this time include: I.V. therapy, patient assessment, documentation, and intubations. Specific complaint and age-based assessment will allow the student to gain the experience needed for a successful start in the prehospital treatment of acutely ill and injured patients.
EMER 1218 Paramedic II 4 5 6 0 EMER 1117 Paramedic I and EMER 1123 Paramedic Clinical I This course includes both didactic and laboratory experience in pre-hospital management of acutely ill or seriously injured persons. Emphasis is placed on pulmonary emergencies, cardiology, neurology, endocrinology, allergies, and anaphylaxis, gastroenterology, renal/urology, toxicology, hematology, environmental conditions, behavior/psychiatric disorders, gynecology and obstetrics.
EMER 1224 Paramedic Clinical II 4 0 0 16 EMER 1217 Paramedic II This course includes supervised rotations in clinical settings. Emphasis is on the application of previous coursework in the clinical environment. Along with skills learned in the previous semester, the student will also be able to use those taught during the current semester. The student will focus upon specific complaint and age-based contacts during these clinical settings.
EMER 1233 Critical Cardiac Care 3 2 2 0 Health Care Provider CPR, American Red Cross This course provides students with a framework for recognition and treatment of cardiac related emergencies. Students will gain a working knowledge in the acquisition and interpretation of standard 3 Lead monitoring and 12 Lead ECG. Emphasis is placed on the pathophysiology of cardiac related emergencies. Students learn the evolution of Acute Coronary Syndromes and treatment of such disorders. Successful completion of course leads the student to gain certification as Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider as recognized by the American Heart Association.
EMER 1318 Paramedic III 8 8 0 0 EMER 1217 Paramedic II, EMER 1223 Paramedic Clinical II, and EMER 1233 Critical Cardiac Care This course includes both didactic and laboratory experience in pre-hospital management of traumatically injured persons and age specific injured and ill persons. Emphasis is placed on infectious and communicable disease, trauma, trauma systems and mechanism of injury, hemorrhage and shock, soft tissue trauma, burns, head and facial trauma, spinal trauma, thoracic trauma, abdominal trauma, musculoskeletal trauma, neonatology, pediatrics, geriatrics, abuse and assault, patients with special challenges and acute interventions for the chronic care patient.
EMER 1324 Paramedic IV/Field Internship 4 0 0 16 EMER 1314 Paramedic III and EMER 1233 Advanced Cardiac Life Support This course contains information and practice scenarios to help students apply fundamentals previously learned. During this internship the student will have supervised rotation on ambulance runs for the first line treatment. Students will be able to access and treat patients from start to finish under the supervision of a Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic.
